Public art experimentation
allows artists to push boundaries, explore new mediums, and engage with diverse audiences in unique ways. By experimenting with materials, techniques, and spaces, artists can uncover innovative approaches to storytelling, challenge societal norms, and create work that resonates on both personal and communal levels. Medium experimentation, in particular, can unlock untapped creative potential, helping artists discover new textures, dynamics, and emotional layers in their work. From an art therapy perspective, this process of letting go -releasing expectations and embracing uncertainty- can be deeply therapeutic. It fosters resilience, encourages risk-taking, and helps artists reconnect with the pure joy of creation. By stepping outside of their comfort zones, artists not only grow technically but also emotionally, finding new avenues for self-expression and healing.
THE PATCHUP MURAL SESSIONS is a project taking shape at the legendary Space1026 studio in Philadelphia, Pa. This year long project promotes a lot of the points listed above. It also takes points from Street Art in that the work has a temporary aspect and can be weathered, covered, or taken down at anytime. The ultimate mission is to produce and experiment with mural art in different ways while exploiting a flow state process.
The mural sessions rotate through a roster of local artists each month until October 2025. Each month an artist or group of artists comes to the courtyard annex gallery and create a large scale mural painting on the 24’x8’ panels. The mural sessions are synced up with the indoor monthly gallery shows at Space1026. This way visitors can experience visual stimuli inside as well as outside during their time at the space.
Throughout the year the curators of The PatchUp are taking down portions of each mural to archive for the group gallery show in October 2025. Another way the curators are preserving the art is by documenting the artist’s process through time-lapse video and photography. The group gallery show will be a large display of collaged mural details as well as work from the individual artists that participated in the project. It is sure to be a exhibition of talent and a reflection of what The PatchUp aims to accomplish.
